Golden Hour Tips for Couples Planning Wedding Photos – Suffolk Wedding Photography

Golden hour—the dreamy period just after sunrise or before sunset—offers the most stunning, romantic lighting for your wedding photos. Plan your Suffolk wedding photography to make the most of it:

1. Know When Golden Hour Happens

The timing varies depending on the season and location. Use apps like Golden Hour Calculator or check online for accurate timings on your wedding day.

2. Plan Your Timeline Around It

Work with your photographer to fit golden hour into your schedule. It typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour, so plan accordingly. If it’s during dinner, sneak out between courses!

3. Scout the Location

Work with your photographer/wedding venue on the perfect spot for that golden light – open horizon (fields, beaches, or hilltops) or interesting backdrops where the light filters through trees work well. Your wedding venue will know the best spots, where the sun sets.

4. Be Flexible

Golden hour lighting changes quickly. Be ready to head out when your photographer gives the go-ahead for the perfect light.

5. Consider the Season

A winter wedding’s golden hour might occur in the late afternoon, while summer weddings will have it closer to evening. Factor this in when planning.

6. Trust Your Photographer

Let your photographer guide you on poses and positioning. They’ll know how to make the most of the soft, warm light for that golden glow.

7. Embrace the Magic and have fun!

Don’t stress about perfection. Laugh, cuddle, twirl—natural emotions and movements look incredible during this time.

8. Have a Backup Plan

Golden hour isn’t guaranteed, but it can happen at the drop of a hat, at all times of year. It is worth planning two smaller couple sessions to account for the possibility of golden hour. In the summer, I often take couple photos after groups and then plan an ad-hoc slot after dinner to account for the possibility of golden hour.
